 | Coping with Other Discomforts |

Headache
- Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding caffeine
- Get plenty of rest and sleep
- Eat regularly
- Take a bath or get a massage - reduce stress
- Do breathing relaxation exercises
Constipation
- Drink 64 fl. oz. of fluids daily (minimum)
- Exercise
- Eat raw fruits and veggies
- Eat lots of whole grains
- Take Metamucil, up to 3 times daily
Hemorrhoids
- Follow steps for comforting constipation
- Avoid straining during a bowel movement
- Sit in warm tub 15-20 minutes daily
- Use non-alcohol baby wipes to clean yourself
- Witch hazel to provide cooling
- Essential oil of Lavender to reduce discomfort
- Do Kegel exercises

- Don't sit on toilet for long periods
- If the hemorrhoids require more intensive therapy, speak to your doctor about an appopriate pharmaceutical treatment
Difficulty Sleeping
- Exercise daily
- drink warm milk at bedtime
- avoid caffeine
- do relaxation exercises
- decrease lights and noise
- try to sleep whenever you are tired, short naps can be more refreshing
- do not try to force yourself to go to sleep
Fatigue
- Eat well and regularly
- Increase iron enriched foods
- Get enough rest and sleep
- Exercise daily
- If iron deficient, speak to your care giver about an iron supplement. If iron supplement causes bowel problems ask to switch to a non-kelated iron formula
Backache
- Good posture
- Bend from knees when lifting
- Supportive hose and shoes
- Exercise
- Heat or cold to lower back
- Back rub or massage
- Pillows for supporting hips when lying down
- Sit on a balance ball when watching TV
- Take frequent breaks when sitting for extended period of time
Edema
- Increase intake of protein
- Salt food to taste
- Avoid standing for long periods
- Increase fluid intake
- Avoid wearing tight clothing
- Rest and elevate legs 2-3 times daily
- Take a warm bath for 20-30 minutes
- Prescription compression hose
Leg Cramps
- Increase intake of calcium
- Massage
- Compression hose
