- We get to know one another, including familiarizing myself with your medical history and previous childbirth experiences

- We discuss how your pregnancy is going so far and any feelings or discomfort you may have

- We discuss emotional aspects of pregnancy and review any exercises or remedies to relieve pregnancy discomfort

|
- We discuss all birthing options and your hopes, dreams, fears and desires about the upcoming birth
|
|
|
|
- We review the stages of labour and go over all options
|
|
|
|
- I provide resources (pregnancy massage, mother's group, breastfeeding, childbirth classes) for you
|
|
|
|
- I assist you with any research or information you may need
|
|
|
|
- We explore your coping skills as individuals and as a couple with an eye toward getting the best out of them
|
|
|
|
- I teach you how to exercise informed consent with your decision making
|
|
|
|
- I am available for Telephone consultation and email contact - usually a 24 hour maximum turn around time

- I am on-call starting 2 weeks before estimated date of delivery - 24 hours a day

- I provide 3 hours of customized childbirth education
|
|
|
|
- I provide consultation regarding prenatal testing and procedures available
|

- I accompany you to appointments (dependent on availability)

|

|
|
|
| Labour and Delivery |
|
|
|
- I provide continuous support
|
|
as soon as needed, even at your home |
|
- I am available to answer any questions about pre-labour and the start of actual labour
|
|
|
|
- I provide telephone support until you wish for me to join you in labour
|
|
|
|
- I help facilitate communication between you and the hospital staff if necessary
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
- I bring a birth bag of tools for massage and comfort measures
|
|
|
|
- I provide continuous emotional and physical support until after the birth of the baby, including:
- body, foot, hand massage
- visualization and guided imagery
- information about labour and birth and expectations
- various position changes to help with labour progress such as counter pressure for back labour
- use of hot and cold packs
|
|
|
|
- I take special care to help your partner or other family members (as desired) so they can participate more fully in the birth experience. (i.e. make phone calls, go for food and water, call the midwife)
|
|
|
|
- I provide a back-up Doula in the rare event of an emergency and I am unavailable
|
|
|
|
- If desired, I can take photographs of the labour and birth
|
|
|
|

| Post Partum Visit |

- I answer any additional questions you might have
|

- I provide breastfeeding support
|

- I provide referral to postpartum support if required
|

- I refer you to a support group if necessary
